| Shown here is the coalescence of core-shell nanoparticles. There are three, mutually incompatible components:
Blue, the matrix Green,the shell Red, the core
The shells are created by a diffusion mechanism - spinodal decomposition - that lowers the free energy of the system. The short term result is an egg with two yokes, but the yokes will soon coalesce as well. The final result is a larger nanoparticle that still has a core-shell moprhology.
